OUR IMPACT
STORIES
I am Siyabonga Khusi, a 23-year-old man and I reside in Gcilima.
I joined and trained with Siyavuna in 2014 when I was only 16 years old. I was encouraged and inspired by my parents who are also part of Siyavuna. I enjoy selling my vegetables to Kumnandi and in my community. I joined the Bulbine team with my mother in the year 2021. I am so grateful and fortunate for being a part of Siyavuna as this helped to make a great and beautiful change in my life. I was able to save my money and start a spaza shop business which is now going well with the aid of my earnings.
What excites me is that I was able to buy myself a deep freeze which I use to store my merchandise and I paid for my own learner’s license. I serve as an inspiration to my peers as I have had the liberty of working with the elderly. I now use my experience as a Mentor under the Social Employment Fund (SEF) programme to impart the lessons I have learnt to the young participants in this programme.
My name is Slindilile Nxumalo. I am a 28-year-old female farmer from Gcilima,
who started working with Siyavuna 6 years ago in 2016. I was trained by the organisation and thereafter started growing vegetables to sustain myself and my family. Last year in 2021, I started working on the Bulbine site and was part of the team that established the Bulbine crops grown In the Gcilima site. Coming from a disadvantaged background, I was able to help improve my living conditions even further through joining the Bulbine project. Through the aid of my earnings, I am able to support my 2 children one of which is a newborn. I come from a background of doing basic gardening, but through Siyavuna I have evolved through learning basic organic vegetable gardening.
Currently I act as a bridge connecting the elderly and the young as I previously experienced working with the Siyavuna elderly farmers in the Bulbine site. I enjoy working as a technical advisor who liaises with the Mentors and young participants under the Social Employment Fund (SEF) programme. One day, I have a dream of becoming a selfsustained farmer though I face the challenge of limited land. This however has not stood in the way of my passion for agriculture as I continue to be involved in projects that encourage farming, be it among my peers or the elderly.
I am Fezeka Cordelia Yalo, a 32-year-old woman from Nositha location.
Previously I faced unemployment so I am now excited to be part of the Social Employment Fund (SEF) programme. I have always been passionate about Agriculture. I studied and obtained a diploma in farming management. Currently I enjoy the opportunity to put into practice what I learned, incorporating it with the knowledge I gained on the basic organic vegetable gardening training I did with Siyavuna. I joined the SEF programme in July 2022 as a supervisor and come from a home which used to grow its own vegetables for consumption.
My earnings are helping me finish a house I stared building but struggled to finish due to financial challenges. My life has now improved as I am able to save a bit of money and can afford to meet my 2 children’s needs. I see myself as a self-sustained farmer in both crop and animal production. My plan is to start with the little I now have to form a foundation paving a way to my dream.
My name is Alice Nxele and I am a 53-year- old female farmer residing in Malangeni.
I joined Siyavuna 9 years ago already now in 2013. I enjoy selling my produce to Kumnandi and my community. Every month I look forward to attending our farmers association meeting, where we meet and discuss about our challenges and share the victories we have. I save part of my earnings with Save Act and Stokvels. Ever since I have been with Siyavuna, my life has changed so much. My earnings have helped me build a house which my children and I enjoy.
I joined the Social Employment Fund programme as technical advisor in August 2022. I now enjoy giving my knowledge of basic organic gardening to the youth. Recently under SEF, I bought myself a new bed. My plan is to continue saving and making my family’s life enjoyable and comfortable.
